daily grind

i was sitting in a window passing time
with a little cheese and crackers and a glass of wine
when a soldier passing by
dropped a little bit of science in my ever changing mind
you can beat the daily grind without a revolutionary war
leave a quarter in the bucket and your hands untied
you're a monkey in the middle of a world outside
put a penny in the pocket of a woman with a humble home of paper bags
watch her body as it sags beneath the pressure of a dying soul

you've got to break, change, separate
sever all ties from the chains that bind you
sever all ties from the puppeteer
sever all ties from the laws that blind you
and suddenly you realize you're here

pick a flower for a lady and watch her smile
pick a road on the map and drive a mile
have a little gin and tonic with a backseat driver
in a plastic limousine
as he reads a magazine about the revolutionary war
take your lover by the hand and do see do
get a grip on your life then let it go
put a penny in the pocket of a woman with a humble home of paper bags
watch her body as it sags beneath the pressure of a dying soul

in time you'll recognize the demons in your head
don't give it all away for petty cash or daily bread
in time you'll realize what you couldn't learn from school
on and on the days go by i play the fool
